Part two of my first year animation course project. This is the tweened symbol-based version of the frame-by-frame I did first:

Now you can see how they compare to each other. My teacher said this look like a video game animation.

Which one is your favorite?

Character, animation, blah blah everything rightfully done by :iconradenwa:.

the first thing bugging me with this, is that when he appears to be doing a slow motion somersault, the background doesn't slow down.
so its as if he's hovering on air for a few seconds there.

and his hair appears to be defying the wind...

but I'm giving you a "good job" pat on the back for this!
damn this is awesome!! i know i've learned flash before, and i could say this must be friggin' hard and complicated... what with the tweens and scripts and junk.. but you did such a wonderful job.
and the character is kinda adorable! your style has not changed pal! ^_^
What do you think?

some of it's ok but his body and limbs seem to move more like a marionette. the other one looks more natural.

Because it's twee-eened, naturally :D

You don't make natural movements with tweens.

wow neat!

it's a bit odd how he's stopping for a moment in mid-air, but otherwise it fits together nicely.

As far as animation style goes I think there are a few spots you can work on, as a rough this is really well done. Things I'd like to see, you have a great understanding of the principals of animation, which is apparent here. Anticipation before the action, and a decent follow thru. It appears as tho everything moves on an arch which is another plus. Im not thrilled about the composition of the shot, I personally like the camera angle of the original and the smoother tween in the previous one. Since this artwork is so crisp and clean, I think you need to pay a bit more attention to some of the details of the motion and the character. I'd do a bit of hand studies, just to get the basic shape a bit more flushed, the beauty of animation is that it doesn't have to be perfect all the time but since you are just rotating a few of the pieces around it might be nice to make them look a bit more functional. I'd attach the board to his feet a bit better, so when the board moves his feet react more to the board and visa versa. Maybe do some research on skateboarders and how their feet movements make the board move. As far as functional the animation works, but it appears very student-like. I hope you take it that little step farther and push to it forward more. I love seeing people do studies such as this. Practice motion and animation. Out of curiosity what program did you use? Your art style translates very nicely into this, and I think you could create alot of amazing pieces this way. last thing I'd say is add a bit more variety to your loops, example would be your hair. As the piece continues you start to see the pattern where as a adding maybe two or three more keys where the flip is or before he jumps might break the pattern. Sorry this is a bit long but I wanted to give you some good feed back that might help you improve your animations. Not that this is bad I really like this but I see alot of potential to push it from good to great.

Thank you. I use Flash, can be quite naturally seen from the style ;)

I skate myself so I know how things work, but when antigravitational force is involved I'm not sure if I can get it fully correct.

Don't think so much about the sci-fi side, if you can incorporate real life situations into the animation it will read much easier to the audience. For instance, theres alot of space situations that we do not understand. But, we understand things that are slightly simular to the idea we are trying to push a crossed. which allows us to use those ideas to suggest the fake situation is real. Make sense? an example would be Dragons, they aren't real but we know how bird wings work, thus we can make believe that dragon wings would work similarly, we also know how lizard feet work, so forth and so forth. Through these random techniques we can create things that arent real yet make people believe that they are.

So what I suggest is that you watch the way the board reacts to your feet movements, maybe watch some videos on how kytes fly and try to meet somewhere in the middle between fabric and board, Or maybe watch some skysurfing videos. And just focus on how their feet move upon the board. Either way you understand my point :-P Sorry I done on a bit when it comes to animation stuffs....

I think you could frame by frame this if you really wanted too. The thing that makes the frame by frame better is its smoothness that adds to the character of the piece.
